Professional Auto Diagnostics for Japanese Vehicles

When something isn't right with your vehicle, finding the actual cause of the problem is the first step toward fixing it properly. A warning light or trouble code can provide valuable information, but it doesn't always tell the whole story.

At Westlake Independent Automotive, our ASE-certified technicians specialize in diagnosing Toyota, Lexus, Honda, Acura, Nissan, Infiniti, Subaru, and Mazda vehicles. We combine advanced diagnostic equipment with hands-on testing, technical information, and years of experience to determine what's causing the problem and what is needed to correct it.

Whether you're dealing with a Check Engine Light, an electrical problem, a starting issue, poor performance, an unusual noise, or a problem that only happens occasionally, our goal is to accurately identify the cause before recommending a repair.

Check Engine Light and Trouble Code Diagnostics

Modern vehicles contain numerous computers, sensors, modules, and electronic systems that continuously monitor how the vehicle is operating. When one of these systems detects a problem, it may store a diagnostic trouble code and turn on the Check Engine Light or another dashboard warning light.

Retrieving a trouble code is an important first step, but a trouble code isn't a diagnosis. The same code can have several possible causes, and replacing a part based on the code alone may not correct the problem.

Our technicians use the information from the vehicle's computer as a starting point. From there, we perform the appropriate testing to determine what's actually causing the problem and what is needed to correct it.

A flashing Check Engine Light can indicate a more serious problem, such as a severe engine misfire. If the light is flashing, especially if the vehicle is running poorly, contact us before continuing to drive so we can help you determine the safest next step.

Problems We Diagnose

Not every vehicle problem comes with a warning light. Some problems show up as a noise, vibration, intermittent electrical issue, change in performance, or simply a vehicle that isn't behaving the way it normally does.

Our technicians diagnose a wide range of mechanical and electrical concerns, including:

  • Check Engine Lights and other dashboard warning lights
  • Engine performance and drivability problems
  • Starting, charging, and electrical problems
  • ABS and traction control warning lights
  • Overheating, unusual noises, and vibrations
  • Intermittent problems that come and go

Because today's vehicles have so many interconnected systems, accurate diagnosis is especially important. A symptom in one area of the vehicle may actually be caused by a problem somewhere else.

Why Accurate Diagnosis Matters

Replacing parts without properly identifying the cause of a problem can become expensive very quickly. It can also leave you with the same problem after the repair is completed.

Taking the time to diagnose the vehicle properly allows us to determine what has failed, what caused the failure when possible, and what actually needs to be repaired.

Once we've completed the diagnostic process, we'll explain what we found, answer your questions, and go over our recommendations with you before moving forward with repairs.

Auto Diagnostics FAQs

Is a diagnostic scan the same as diagnosing my vehicle?

No. A diagnostic scan allows us to communicate with the vehicle's computer systems and retrieve trouble codes and other information. That information helps point our technicians in the right direction, but additional testing is often needed to determine the actual cause of the problem.

Why is my Check Engine Light on?

A Check Engine Light can be triggered by many different problems involving the engine, emissions system, sensors, fuel system, ignition system, or other components. Retrieving the trouble code is the first step. Proper testing is then used to determine what's causing the code to set.

Can you diagnose electrical problems?

Yes. Our technicians diagnose a wide range of automotive electrical problems, including battery and charging concerns, starting problems, warning lights, electrical components that aren't operating properly, and intermittent electrical issues.

Can you diagnose a problem if there isn't a warning light?

Yes. Not every mechanical or electrical problem will trigger a dashboard warning light. If your vehicle is making an unusual noise, running differently, experiencing an intermittent problem, or simply doesn't seem right, we can inspect and test the vehicle to help determine the cause.

What vehicles do you diagnose?

We specialize exclusively in Japanese vehicles, including Toyota, Lexus, Honda, Acura, Nissan, Infiniti, Subaru, and Mazda. We work on gas, hybrid, and electric models.
